ISLAMABAD: Rivers Indus, Chenab and Kabul are flowing in low flood at Kalabagh; reaches of Marala-Khanki and Khanki-Qadirabad and the reach of Warsak-Nowshera respectively, Federal Flood Commission (FFC) noted on Thursday.
The daily report also added, however, that all other main rivers including rivers Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej were flowing normally. Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs were said to be at elevations of 1516.30 feet and 1231.55 feet respectively, which were 33.70 feet and 10.45 feet below their respective Maximum Conservation Levels of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet. When compared to last year, the combined live storage capacity of Tarbela, Chashma and Mangla reservoirs was also found to have gone down from 12.935 MAF to 11.257 MAF. Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, also stated that the westerly wave trough found over the northern parts of Afghanistan on Wednesday, lies over North-eastern Afghanistan on Thursday. A seasonal low currently lies over North-western Balochistan while weak, moist current from the Arabian Sea were also found to have penetrating up to 5000 feet in the upper parts of the country.
Scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain are also expected at isolated places over upper catchments of all major rivers, including areas in Northern & North-eastern Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala and Lahore Divisions), D.G Khan Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and North-eastern Balochistan during the next 24 hours, according to Flood Forecasting Division. In addition, isolated thunderstorm and rain may also occur over Bahawalpur Division in the same period. Moderate flood is also being expected in hill torrents of D.G Khan in the next 24 hours. The local tributaries of rivers Chenab and Ravi (nullahs) are also expected to flow in moderate flood during the next 48 hours. The Commission has, hence, advised all concerned authorities to remain vigilant, closely observe the weather situation and take all necessary precautionary measures avoid human and property losses.
